It is the user’s responsibility to determine the suitability of any material and / or procedure for a specific purpose and to adopt such safety precautions as may be necessary.

WARNING:

High temperatures are dangerous; they can cause serious burns and the ignition of combustible materials.

HELIX SCIENTIFIC has taken great care in the design of this instrument to protect users from hazards, but users should pay attention to the following points:

  • Use care and wear protective gloves at all times.
  • Do not put hot objects on or near combustible objects, liquids or gases.
  • Do not operate the instrument close to inflammable liquids or gases.

2 INTRODUCTION:

The “JET-STREAM” Dry Down Evaporator is specifically designed to accelerate the concentration and dry down of Solid Phase Extraction eluent and other synthesis samples in a variety of 96 well collection plates.

Depending on sample volumes and eluent solution / solvent, dry down can normally be achieved in a matter of minutes. Typical applications include Solid Phase Extraction, Combinatorial Chemistry and other concentration techniques used in Bioanalytical techniques.

When connected to an inert gas supply, (typically Nitrogen), the “Jet-Stream” gassing hood can be positioned over the surface of the samples which increases the rate of dry down / evaporation.

4 INSTALLATION:

The “JET-STREAM” Dry Down Evaporator is supplied fully assembled ready for use.

The “JET-STREAM” Dry Down Evaporator is made up from two main parts:

  • Stand. & Gassing Hood and Heater Base
  • Thermocouple

Carefully unwrap protection around gassing hood flow valve.

Connect the thermocouple to the heater via (two pinned plug). Adjust thermocouple so that the tip is in the block heater. Tighten the fitting to secure the thermocouple. (Be sure not to have tip of thermocouple extended too far into the block or it will interfere with loading plates.

The instrument should be placed either on a laboratory bench or in a fume hood. Ensure the instrument is placed away from hot objects or combustible substances. Do not place instrument near inflammable liquids or gases.

5 SET UP / ASSEMBLY:

  • Attach silicone tubing to the gas supply manifold and flow control valve.

(Check to ensure that there are no excessive bends or kinks in the tubing. This will restrict gas flow and decrease efficiency).

  • Connect the gas supply tubing with a suitable gas supply, (typically Nitrogen).
  • The gas pressure should be regulated between approx. 10 –35 in2 (Pounds per square inch) (Note: Higher gas pressures will waste gas and may cause hazardous sample splashing).

Keep gas supply tubing as short as possible as this ensures efficient heat transfer.

6 OPERATION:

  • Plug the power cord from the controller into a grounded outlet. The power switch for the controller is located on the front of the unit.
  • Raise gassing manifold to maximum height by releasing locking thumb-screw on the rear of the upright column.
  • Place sample (96 well plate) onto the base, in the location plate.
  • Running the “Jet-Stream/” approx. 5 minutes before placing sample plates on the “Jet-Stream” can accelerate Dry Down.
  • Once power switch is turned “on” the base will start to heat. The factory pre-set temperature is 75°C, however to change the temperature setting, press and hold the blue “set” button and press the up or down key to the desired temperature.

(Note: Evaporator Gas Heater temperature is set to the desired set point, typically approx. 75°C).

  • Lower gassing hood so the 96 well needles are positioned above the samples. (Note: Do not position needles in the sample liquid, as this will cause bubbling, foaming and possible harmful aerosols). Liquid in the needles will also block gas flow that will lead to inefficient dry down).
  • Ensure gas supply tubing does not have any excessive bends or kinks as this will restrict gas flow and decrease efficiency.
  • Turn on gas supply. (Ensure gas supply to the “Jet-Stream” is regulated between approx. 10 –35 in2, Pounds per square inch).
  • When adjusting flow rate it is suggested that the flow control valve be set wide open (counter clockwise) and gas flow reduced by turning the control valve clockwise until optimum conditions are obtained.  In certain cases dry down times can be accelerated by adjusting the gassing hood lower after several minutes of evaporation.
  • Once dry down is complete raise the gassing hood, turn off  gas supply. Remove the 96 well sample plate.

7 USER MAINTAINANCE:

The “Jet-Stream” is designed to give a long service life with limited serviceable parts. The “Jet-Stream” Dry Down Evaporator should only be dismantled by properly trained technicians. In the event that you have a problem, contact HELIX SCIENTIFIC INC., our professional staff will assist in diagnosing the problem and when necessary provide replacement parts and installation instructions.

If you have problems with the instrument that cannot be readily remedied, you should contact HELIX SCIENTIFIC INC. and return the instrument if necessary. If returned, please include details of the fault being experienced, serial number of the unit and date purchased. Ensure the instrument is returned in the original packing. HELIX SCIENTIFIC INC. cannot accept any responsibility for damaged instruments that are not properly packed for shipping.

8 PERFORMANCE:

The Jet-Stream Evaporator is designed to rapidly evaporate solvents.

Gas passes through the constant volume nylon manifold, assuring an equal amount of gas to each port. Gas is supplied from the gas source by flexible silicone rubber tubing to a fine needle valve on the edge of the gassing manifold for accurate gas control.

Stainless steel needles blow gas onto the surface of the sample, resulting in rapid evaporation of solvent and minimizing the time for sample preparation for further analysis.

All materials used in the manufacture of this instrument are laboratory quality and can withstand contact with most organic solvents.

Dry down performance is affected by the microplate size, sample volume, height of needles, gas flow and heater temperature.

TYPICAL EVAPORATION RATES:

Solvent   Heater Temp   Gas Flow   Time
Methanol    55°C  0.05ml/min 8.0min
Acetonitrile  57°C  0.11ml/min  10.0 min
Ethanol   50°C 0.10ml/min 4.2 min
